Orange Revolution has its roots in a doodle-comic called Skippy that LC did in high school that he later developed into the webcomic Freedom Fries. Early on in the comic appeared "the Infamous Orangenius", a mischievous and cynical terrorist who would become a regular component of the comic's antics, often causing suffering to the title character and/or being irritated a lot. Orangenius is shown to be a proponent of oranges and is the leader, and possibly only member of, the Vitamin C Fun Club. His nemesis, Limeboy, appears in the comic in several strips, their history together unknown. One of Orangenius's most interesting appearances is in a 5-page fight scene with the eccentric deejay-turned-surfer-turned-swordsman DJ Izzi Izzi, who is mortally wounded at the end of the sequence.

In October 2005, as a result of negative feedback and LC's declining interest in his short-form style, Freedom Fries became a long-form comic focused on Orangenius and his struggle against the new President, Arnold Schwartzenegger. While these comics had a continous storyline, they were still rather humorous and goofy and often of a non-sequitur nature. Many other celebrities made significant appearances in the comic during this period, including Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Michael Moore, Michael Myers, Michael J. Fox, and Mike Tyson. Due to the action sequences, use of perspectives, and more detailed but less frequent updates, LC's artistic ability increased tremendously as a result. However, general consensus showed this new long-form style to be unpopular, and Freedom Fries went back to its previous short-form style where it lasted until October 2006 when the comic was ended due to lack of interest by its creator.

During the evolution of the comic, and especially during the development of the long-form period, an elaborate story was being formulated, fleshing out the history of the characters and building upon this fictional world that had slowly grown over the years. However, after some deliberation, LC decided that he didn't possess the skill to illustrate his increasingly complicated story. So, he turned to the artistic network, deviantArt, and while his pitches were largely ignored, one artist, Demon Uncle, agreed to collaborate despite there being no script and no payment offered. The first draft of the first chapter's script was written in May 2006, and, taking criticism from Ransom and Escushion into consideration, the script was finalized in June. Production started in July, and Orange Revolution launched on September 4th.
